The association was formed in 1870 and was composed primarily of veterans of the Civil War. It met annually in reunion to pay tribute to one another and to honor deceased members. It disbanded in 1922. The Cleveland Light Artillery was originally organized in 1839 by 9 members of the Cleveland Grays gun squad, an independent military organization made up of young men chosen from the area's elite families. The 19th Ohio Battery was recruited in 1862 in Cleveland, Ohio by Captain Joseph C. Shields, and trained in University Heights, Ohio. The battery went by railroad to Cincinnati, and entered the war in Kentucky in pursuit of Confederate cavalry leader Col. James Hunt Morgan. The battery was mustered out of service in June 1865. Many of the reunions were arranged and administered by Frank Gilbert. The collection consists of a minute book of annual reunions, beginning with the 7th (1873) and ending with the 51st (1916), when the association dissolved.
